LAN / Network Administration

LAN and Network Administrators are in charge of the installation and configuration of the computer network at a company. Their duties range from installing the hardware (cables, NIC's, and hubs) to configuring the software (NetWare, Windows NT, Proxy settings). Once the network is functioning properly, it is usually their job to maintain the integrity of the network if anything should go wrong. They deal directly with the Support Specialists rather that talk with the users. LAN/Network Administrators have to be knowledgeable about protocols such as IPX, TCP/IP, and RAS. They also need to understand the physical layout of a network and the general configuration of computers on the network.
Responsibilities of Network Administrators may include:

  • Network Security
  • Installing new applications
  • Distributing software upgrades
  • Monitoring daily activity
  • Enforcing licensing agreements
  • Developing a storage management program
  • Providing for routine backups

Knowledge of Network/Internet protocols, and Networking hardware (HUBs, routers, cabling) is desired. Is is worth while to obtain a certification for LAN/Network Administration from Cisco or Microsoft. Any company or organization that uses computer networks in its business is a likely employer. These include insurance companies, banks, financial institutions, federal and state governments, universities, and other corporations that rely on networking. Salaries range from $35,000 to $75,000 per year.
