Web Programming

Web Programmers manage the computer server and technical programming aspects of a web site. The Programmer usually implements and maintains the server and/or routers, and any applications needed for their site. They write the necessary source code to deliver Web pages to the user. It includes writing code in HTML and XML. This job also includes writing in a variety of programming languages, including:

  • Active Server Pages(ASP)
  • C++
  • Visual Basic
  • JavaScript
  • Java
  • Perl

The skills needed for web programming include knowledge of HTML, one or more of the programming languages, web development software such as an HTML editor, and basic knowledge of operating systems. Web programmers should also have experience with UNIX Systems, have some knowledge of Database Systems, and be familiar with several Web browsers. Communication skills are necessary to provide support to clients of the web site. CGI is also another great skill to know. CGI stands for Common Gateway Interface - a gateway between a Web server and a browser. However, CGI is not a language. Rather, it's a method for transferring unique information between a client and a server.
Salaries for Web Programmers can range from $10K to $65K per year, depending on education level and experience. Education and training for web programmers usually include a B. A. or B. S. in Computer Science or Information Systems. These degrees provide the most necessary training, but are not absolutely required. In some cases, a 2 year AA degree is sufficient for entry level.
